the journey took them a long time

I spent anywhere from one to two hours a day on the metro while I studied abroad in Paris. At times the ride could feel endless, contemplative, and sometimes even meditative.

Created for Wildlife: Trading and Conservation, a show that aims to raise awareness about wildlife trafficking.

A topic as expansive as conservation is greater than the sum of its parts, yet it must be broken down in order for us to understand it. Our conversations with experts with IFAW gave me a glimpse into what I now see as a monumental and complex effort to save the pangolin. Each of the staff at IFAW has their role to play, but we as members of the public also have a responsibility. The importance of consumer education and the recognition that conservation is culture specific has become increasingly evident, as has the understanding that ignorance can be a greater driving force behind poaching than greed. We need to make a greater effort to ensure consumers understand that while wildlife traders are making a profit because of the high price of pangolin scales and meat, the real price is the loss of this species and the damage to the ecosystem in which it lives.

Gua Bao

Created for Light Grey Art Lab’s Foodies gallery show.

One of the best things about visiting Taiwan as a kid was going to the night markets. I’d play games and stuff my face with good food, and all would be right with the world. It was during these visits when I was introduced to gua bao (pork belly sandwich), one of the staples of night market cuisine.

A good gua bao can be difficult to find the US, especially if you don’t live in a big city. And even when you can find it, it can be expensive—so my mom learned to make her own gua bao so we could have it in the US too.

There’s no dignified way to eat a gua bao. If your feel overcome with the desire to stuff it in your face, do it. Be free.
